Canon PowerShot SX420 Digital Camera w/ 42x Optical Zoom - Wi-Fi & NFC Enabled (Black)
- I bought the Canon SX420 IS camera to take with me on trips where I fly to a destination. I have a DSLR and lenses I use at other times, but unless I am specifically flying somewhere to take photos, it is too much to carry with me. This camera does a fine job, once you get the hang of it.Pros:- Small, packs into carry on luggage, lightweight, comfortable in the hand- Good images in bright light with very good color balance and moderate sharpness.- Very good optical zoomCons:- Sometimes the light metering doesn\'t get it right, especially in backlit situations.- Sometimes has difficulty focusing, especially at high zooms- Images quickly become grainy at high zooms or in low light (not surprising with this size lens)- Lacks some modes like aperture priority it could easily have with just additional firmwareOther:- Hard to see back display in bright light, but that is not unique to this camera- Battery life could be better, but this is an easy fix, just buy a couple of more batteriesOn my first trip, I took a couple of hundred pictures with it, mostly outdoors in good light. I find the AE (\"P\") mode to be the best along with auto everything else and evaluative metering. I thought I would miss the lack of aperture priority and shutter priority modes, but since it has a relatively small aperture range, I am not sure how much those would help. The results I got when reviewed on a computer were quite good. The color balance appears very good and the sharpness reasonably good. I have read other reviewers saying the images are so poor they returned the camera. I think that means they are overly picky, had higher expectations than they should have for this type of camera, and/or they don\'t know how to use a camera. While some may think of it as a \"point and shoot\" that doesn\'t mean you will always get the best results if you just point it and push the shutter button. Learn how to better control the focus to get better results. I suggest using the smallest focus area, single shot as opposed to continuous auto-focus, and learn how to push the shutter button halfway to get the focus at the distance you want before shooting. Even DSLR and high-end mirrorless cameras will focus on the wrong thing (often the closest object in the focus area) if used incorrectly. As a side benefit, using single shot auto-focus will significantly extend battery life.If you want a small flexible-use camera that you can take along with you to get some decent shots, this is a good choice.Edit: I added a couple of examples of unaltered photos from a recent trip to show what the camera can do.Update 6/11/2021: This camera is a memory card killer. I have now had it somehow \"read lock\" 2 32GB memory cards, and there is nothing to do with the cards except throw them in the trash. NO, it is not the switch on the card, checked and double-checked. Even low level disk management Linux commands cannot reformat the cards once they are in this state.
- I came to Amazon looking for a camera to take on vacations and trips. I only ever use my iPhone for pictures, and wanted to invest in something slightly more professional that wouldn\'t break the bank. I am in no way a photographer, but this camera sure makes me feel like one. It\'s the perfect size for travelers, as it fits in your hand perfectly, as it\'s very small and portable. I think the picture quality is absolutely stunning. I can zoom into a tree from over 100 feet away and it looks as if I\'m right in front of it! I haven\'t taken this camera on my trip to Europe yet, but will update and post the pictures I take once I do. I\'ve mostly just played around with it, taking pictures of my dog or sister. I included a selfie to show the flash - that was taken in a pitch black room. I wasn\'t even sure it would come out clear, but wow! Look at the quality! One thing I would like to address is the wifi, which might be my favorite thing about this camera as a whole. I contemplated buying the Canon powershot SX410, which is a cheaper, slightly older version of this camera, but opted for this because of the wifi feature. I can\'t boast about it enough. I can take a picture of something, click on the wifi option on the camera, connect to the wifi from my phone, open the free camera app and send the picture directly from my camera to my iPhone. I can also delete that picture from the camera once I\'ve saved it to my phone, so I\'ll never run out of space! The battery life is also very impressive and it seems to stay charged for a long time (another reason it\'s great for travelers). And the time it takes to fully charge the battery isn\'t long at all.I\'m just a person who wanted a cool camera to take nice quality pictures. I\'m not a photographer or anything near, but I love clean, crisp quality shots. If you want a small, portable camera that takes AMAZING quality pictures, has a KILLER zoom and flash, and has a wifi feature that allows you to share your pictures on social media in the matter of seconds after taking the picture, this is for you. This camera should be so much more expensive that it is because it\'s absolutely amazing. 10/10 recommend!
- I gave this all 3s because every function you use is reflected on a poor quality display screen. It really could be better. Your prints turn out really nice. But the display shot loses trueness to be able to capture some things. The app is useless. I do not use. It\'s a nice camera for outside shots and vacation scenic daylight. But the screen again is hard to see. Would have preferred a view finder instead of a view screen.
- THIS IS a great camera for the price. The optical zoom is the equivalent of a 1000mm-1200mm manual zoom which is incredible and the wide angle is 24mm. SO I can take beautiful up close flower shots AND last winter I shot a lighthouse that was 400 yards from where I stood and it looked like it was 50 foot away. I have ONE SERIOUS ISSUE with the camera. The 3\" LCD screen washes out so badly in bright light I had to buy some sun shades from Amazon so I could focus on my target, but they are cheaply made, fell off, and break easily, and only help the wash out a LITTLE bit. IF Cannon would put a viewfinder on this camera it would be THEE best Digital Camera in it\'s price range. Honestly I would have easily paid another $50 for it if it had a view finder. Otherwise, I DO LOVE this camera, I belong to a photo group called NY Outdoor Photography and receive fine responses for my posted pics!
