I bought this camera used with a NIKON 55-200 f/4.5-5.6G ED IF AF-S DX VR Lens, both in as-new condition for $300. I paid $45 more to have the mirrors cleaned. Automatic lens focusing is silent, fast, and very precise. My purpose is to take birding pictures in low light with a telephoto lens. The Vibration Reduction helps a lot, and I usually get good pictures by hand. ED(extra low dispersion) glass cancels chromatic aberration, even at maximum zoom, and is a major improvement in lens design. Most shots are nearly perfect.The D40 is the first in a series of famous cameras. The 6.1MP sensor is fine for letter-sized prints at about 260 pixels/inch. But I am usually working on screen with smaller images and I have more resolution than I need. Thus I can still do substantial cropping to optimize the composition.If you should feel you want the extra bells and whistles available on later models, you can get a D90 like my daughter has.
I have a Nikon d200 and d3200. I like my new old D40 with a shutter count of 284. I like it very much.It is lighter about 16 oz and I am using my old Nikon lenses.Thank you.jungsan@aol.com

The seller 1st Web Deals had this for ~$50 after shipping and said it came with two batteries, a strap, and a charger for the camera body. I got everything but one of the batteries and it wasn\'t even a Nikon battery. But the camera works and is in good shape so I\'ll spend a little more and get second battery.

This is my 3rd Nikon D40. I have had the D80 and D7000. There are great features on all of them but the D40 will take great pics, is less expensive and very lightweight.Coupled with a fixed 35mm f1.8 lens this is a perfect camera for travel. You can always zoom or crop afterwards and be assured of great low light performance since the 6MP sensor is more sensitive than other cameras with more MP crammed in.For shooting active kids, the high 1/500 flash sync speed will stop action perfectly.
