  • I won\'t attempt to compare the LX100 to comparably priced cameras, nor will I try to give an in-depth review of all the functionalities. Read about that elsewhere. I will say from the outset that I love the camera, but I understand it\'s shortcomings. If you understand the current state of camera design and a little bit about the physics of optics, then you won\'t be disappointed. I wasn\'t. I knew going in for instance, that this was not quite a pocket camera. Coat pocket yes. Shirt pocket no. Cargo pants pocket yes. Regular jeans pocket no. Although I did manage to cram it in the pocket of one of my looser pairs of jeans.I really wanted to get a 4k video camera. I take a lot of pictures and video of some specific sporting events, family growing and expanding, and lots of tourist stuff. Occasionally I will do some pro documentary work, so I appreciate good tools. Even though I don\'t have a 4k TV, I will soon, and this future proofs me. If you stood in front of 4k TVs at Best Buy and watched the 4k scenery go by, it\'s like IMAX. It\'s just stunning. That said 4k has limitations. You will NOT see the benefit of the 4k if you sit at typical viewing distances. A lot of people have said that, and I claim to be one of the first to notice that. Still, with a big enough screen, and sitting close enough, the effect is stunning. But your grandma sitting in the back of the room won\'t even notice 4k. Heck, grandma doesn\'t even really appreciate HD.Price wise, you have to expect it to cost more than a higher end pocket digital. The bigger and better glass, the bigger sensor, and the 4k video is going to cost. That it\'s under 1000 bucks is a modern technological miracle when compared with what a 1000 bucks bought you ten years ago. If you view it as pricey because your smartphone is now taking 12Mp photos that look pretty good, then you\'ll think it\'s pricey. The price amazes me. I was at the Advanced Television Test Center near D.C in the early 90s., when they were sorting out how to do HDTV. Nobody had hardware. They had one camera. It was a million bucks. Now I have a tiny thing that does 4X the resolution of that original camera, and it\'s practically free. Well, not free, but very reasonable.I also knew going in that it had a limited zoom range of roughly 3 to 1. That relates to the size of the sensor, and the physics of the glass you put in front of it. If you wanted more zoom, it would quickly NOT fit in a coat pocket. If big zoom range and a large sensor is what you want, then this is the wrong camera. You\'re looking for a big DSLR or something like the the Lumix FZ1000. I thought about getting that camera, but I realized for incognito tourism, the little LX100 was the way I wanted to go.Low light. The LX100 is huge advance over my old Sony HX5V. A friend of mine at my suggestion bought the successor to the HX5V, the aptly named HX50V. The 50V was way better under low light than the 5V. Just the other day we did a low light shoot out between the HX50V and the LX100. Night and day. The LX100 wins hands down. The HX50V has a small sensor and some pretty good processing hardware, but it just can\'t beat the big LX100 4/3 sensor and the fast Leica glass. The LX100 literally will turn dark scenes into day with vivid colors and a minimum of noise. And if you hate a little bit of noise, shoot in RAW mode and drag it into Photoshop. If you go to DPReview.com you find lots of comments in the forums trashing the LX100. Many of these people came from somewhat higher end cameras than I was coming from. I also think many of them like to appear as camera aficionados and sending back a disdained camera and bragging about it is the equivalent of sending back a bottle of wine at a restaurant because it\'s \"corked\". Makes you feel like a big shot. Maybe they should have stuck with their 5000 dollar Canon DSLRs.The other big thing I love about the LX100 besides 4k video and low light performance is the controls. If you want to run auto, which does a pretty good job, just set the focus ring to auto and the shutter speed to auto, and you can pretty much blast away in 97% of situations. If you need to adjust it a bit because of back lighting, then the exposure adjustment is right there. But the controls also give you huge flexibility. If you want narrow depth of field, set it at F1.7. Let the shutter speed sort itself out on auto. Voila, nice fuzzy background like pro photos. If you want to turn into a camera hacker, and go beyond the simple auto stuff and few manual adjustments, the menus are a mile deep and will keep you busy forever. If you enjoy fooling with adjustments, you\'ll never get bored with the LX100.Is this my last camera? Probably not. I\'ve read some rumors that Sony is about to come out with a new sensor (that physically shifts to capture RGB), and will be killer in low light and quality. I will enjoy the LX100 until the improvements are just overwhelming and cheaper.I love the low-light capabilities of the LX100 camera. I graduated to this from a roughly 5 year old Sony HX5V. It was one of the early digital shirt pocket compact that did 1080 60i. It had the typical small sensor that produced a lot of noise under low light conditions. I loved that camera but recognized the low light limitations of the form factor. It had a 10X optical zoom which I appreciated a lot, and the optics were pretty good. I have a 10 year old HD camcorder, the Sony HVRA1U. It was a $2500 device in 2006, and now it\'s hopelessly antiquated. It also had 10X optical zoom, and at full tele, the glass produced a lot of chroma aberrations. Camera manufacturers have done a lot of clever things both with their glass, and with internal signal processing to get rid of chroma aberrations. So I gave it 5 stars, because it\'s stupid to deduct points for something a camera of this size could never physically be able to do...like a long zoom. I got the Transcend 64GB High Speed UHS-3 SDXC card. Works fine. We\'ll find out how good it works when I start filling up the chip with 100Mbps 4k video, and trying to play it back. So far so good.If you don\'t care about 4k video, or you want to wait until every cheap little pocket digital is doing 4k, and you don\'t want to fuss with controls for pictures, don\'t spend that 900 bucks. Use your cell phone. Use a cheap little pocket digital. I\'m an early adapter, I like new toys. This one beats the pants off anything I\'ve ever owned.
